Buying Dry Rod Willow….
Buying willow for weaving can be confusing - different lengths, different species, by the pound, etc. If you want to take advantage of this LOCAL (limited) opportunity, you may want to consider purchasing a bundle of 3-4ft, 4-5ft, and 5-6ft. Perhaps purchase with a friend! :)
There are not many willow producers in the United States. Most have minimum orders and shipping is expensive! This is a special opportunity.
To give you a place to start, a “typical” English stake and strand round basket that is 10-12 inches across will need about…
1/2 lb of 3-4fts,
2 lbs of 4-5 fts
1 lb of 5-6 ft.
You will have extra sticks for other projects but you need enough of each length to select the “right” rods for each part of the basket.
You will also need a way to soak the willow - which can take 1-3 weeks depending many factors. Unless you want to permanently stain your tub, you need another option.
Attend the “So You Want to Weave a Willow Basket” presentation on Saturday to learn more. But don’t wait to order willow if you KNOW you want to weave.
There are 100’s of willow projects and techniques so even if you purchase one bundle, its a place to start. If stored in a safe dry space, it can be kept for years!
