Day of Daffodils - Harvest to Cordage

  • 21 Acres 13701 Northeast 171st Street Woodinville, WA, 98072 United States (map)

Join me at 21 Acres in Woodinville to gather, split and learn to make cordage with daffodil stems.

I’m thrilled to have the support and permission of 21 Acres to host a daffodil gathering group. We will harvest lovely long stems (with spent flowers only), learn how to bundle and split them for drying, and make cordage from rehydrated stems I gathered last spring. If you don’t know how to make cordage, no problem. Every wild crafter should learn how. :) My goal is for everyone to go home with bundles of split stems and a new weaving skill. Besides cordage, daffodil stems are great for twining projects like petite baskets or weaving with other soft fibers on a form/mold.

But why not the leaves? Well, I leave the leaves to feed the bulb. The stems are not great energy makers with minimal chlorophyll and a high demand for water. By removing the stem, we also remove the energy demand to produce seeds which aren’t really needed in this location. So instead of simply dead heading by pinching off the flower, we remove the whole stem. I also like the texture and color of the stems for weaving and lean on other plants for weave-able leaves (daylily, iris, etc).

*This is a RAIN OR SHINE event. Boots or shoes that can get muddy are a good idea. We will have some cover for processing but gathering will still be in the elements. There is uneven ground and stinging nettles on the property - a long shirt/jacket and gloves recommended.

Class size maximum: 12 students

Minimum age: 12 years old (with paid adult)

Class registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking, etc) and the small class sizes, I’m unable to support refunds or credits.
