Come play with willow bark!

Willow is an incredible plant offering medicine in its bark (used by humans for more than 3500 years!), habitat for birds in its swaying branches, stability for river and stream banks with its dense roots and so much more.

Willow bark can only be harvested for a few months in the spring and early summer but if dried and storied properly can last for years. For weaving, willow bark can be used to make baskets, hats, jewelry, art, and more.

Though partnerships with local organizations & landowners, I have had a bountiful harvest of fresh willow rods this spring and want to pass some of that on to you. Each student will works with 1) TWO freshly harvested willow rods (between 3-4ft long) to peel AND 2) a rehydrated roll (4ft) to use to practice cutting down to size for weaving. You should easily take home 10 ft worth of lovely willow bark. The rods we will be peeling are about thumb thick and likely 2-3 years old so your rolls will be approx. 2.5-3 inches wide.

This is enough willow to make several small soft fiber twined baskets (around a vase/bottle), a bracelet, earrings, etc. We will discuss bark appropriate projects, techniques and learning resources but we will NOT be weaving during this workshop. This is a hands-on harvesting, preparing and knowledge workshop.

Minimum age: 14

Class size maximum: 8 students | Class size minimum: 6 students

Class registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking, etc) and the small class sizes, I’m unable to support refunds or credits.
