Private Lessons: $65/hr (1 student) plus supply costs. 3 hour minimum.
Semi-Private Lessons: $85/hr (2 students) plus supply costs. 3 hour minimum.
What materials will we work with or what project will we do?
That really depends on your interests, how much time you want to spend, and what supplies I have available.
Interests…I work with a LOT of different basketry styles and weaving materials so likely, I will have something to offer in your area of interest. Please feel free to share inspiration photos, ideas, etc. If I’m not the right teacher for you, I will do my best to offer other suggestions.
If you are interested in cedar, sweetgrass, or spruce root weaving (all sacred Salish materials), I highly encourage you to seek out an indigenous teacher. Visit the Hibulb Cultural Center in Tulalip. Or consider attending the annual Northwest Native American Basketweavers Assoc. gathering or a Northwest Basket Weavers Guild event.
Time: Wild crafting and basket weaving are slow crafts. A small pine needles basket for a beginner might take 3-4 hours, a petite ribbed basket might take a whole day, and most traditional willow baskets are taught over 2 days. There are certainly skill-building options and small projects that can be completed in 3 hours or less but greater skill and size = more time. You can get a feel for how long different projects take by exploring upcoming or past workshops. A private session may be a bit shorter but not by much…you still need time to weave.
Supplies: Since I gather all my own materials locally, my supply is directly influenced by seasonal availability and harvest windows. I’m eager to share and will do my best to find a project that you’re excited about but not all materials are available all the time. Willow, in particular, needs a longer preparation window - often 2-3 weeks. If you’ve harvested your own materials, we can certainly talk about leveraging those. :)
I want to introduce a child in my life to wild crafting, can we schedule a session?
Semi-private sessions are a great option for those with children who would like to learn more about wild crafting and weaving. Most of my workshops are designed for adults but I am happy to work with kiddos one-on-one (or small groups) with parental support. We can discuss what skill-based and age-appropriate projects make sense.
What if my friends want join me?
Awesome…lets schedule a private class! You may find that your friends would like to join you on your wild crafting adventure. If you can rally a small group (usually 6-12 students), we can explore a private class. Private classes can be hosted at my whimsical classroom in NE Seattle or at a mutually agreed upon space.
