Intro to Cordage with Soft Fibers @ Bellevue Botanical Garden

  • Bellevue Botanical Garden 12001 Main St Bellevue, WA 98005 United States (map)

One of the best ways to get to know the weave-ability of a plant is by trying to make cordage with it. So let’s make some cordage! Cordage is hand woven primitive rope or twine. It can be made from 100’s of plants and plant fibers. Cordage has been found in neolithic sites and is still used today to make natural rope.

During our time together we will explore locally available (some seasonal) plants and let our hands tell us more about them. Don’t know how to make cordage, no problem…we’ll learn together. And you’ll get a great start on your very own cordage collection (image 1) - making petite samples of each plant/cordage (image 2). Curious about the wrapped bottle & rock (images 3 & 4)…check out a Knotless Netting Skills Workshop!

We’ll learn when and how to harvest, how to dehydrate and store properly, and how to rehydrate for weaving…

  • Daylily

  • Crocosmia

  • Iris

  • Dandelion

  • Daffodil

  • and more…

Our time together will offer lots of show and tell of other fun ways to use more cordage in your life. Trust me you’re going to want to use it everywhere - it’s addictive, meditative, and just plan fun to make.
