Bulrush Basket (Halloween Edition)

  • Field and Forest Crafts 1608 Northeast 179th Street Shoreline, Washington, 98155 United States (map)

Every July I venture forth in my stylish hip waders to gather one of my “heart” plants - bulrush! And this past July offered an abundant harvest!.

Bulrush or Schoenoplectus acutus, is one of my absolute favorite plants to weave. It’s strong, flexible and versatile. Bulrush is a member of the sedge family but unlike most sedges “with edges” it is round and smooth and most would refer to it as a “rush”. In our area bulrush is found in slow moving fresh water - lakes and ponds are ideal. A little side note, in the U.K. cattails are called bulrush…don’t be confused. :)

WORKSHOP DETAILS

This workshop will be a wonderful way to get to know bulrush as a weaving material and to create a practical and study little woven basket. We’ll do a plaited start and then a simple border to tie it all together.

ALL HALLOWS EVE & WITCHY WISHES

This workshop was inspired by @thatglasgowwitch and her post about setting intentions for the coming year. 13 intentions created, 12 released, and 1 carried forward into the New Year to flourish. Perhaps this wee bulrush basket can hold those intentions until it’s time to let them go.

Minimum age: 14 with accompanying paid adult

Class registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. I’m unable to support refunds or credits.
