Beginner Pine Needle Coil Basketry Series (Thurs x 4)

  • NEW Field and Forest Crafts Classrom 1608 Northeast 179th Street Shoreline, WA, 98155 United States (map)

Pine needle coil basketry is a life long basketry skill! Its a natural material weaving style that doesn’t require soaking or misting or mellow plants. It’s easy peasy to forage usable needles in our area. Simple to clean, easy to store, and last for years! You don’t even need special tools. Pine needles, thread and a needle! (There is even a technique where you ONLY use pine needles - so cool)

My approach to pine needle coil basketry is a simple one - learn a good basic stitch, how to start on a base, how to start without a base and then let your imagination go wild. So that’s what I want to offer you.

In this 4 week series (8+ classroom hours), we will:

  • Learning about harvesting, cleaning and storing needles

  • How to start weaving on a base

  • How to start weaving without a base

  • How to build up your shape & finish your basket

  • How to add beads

  • A wearable surprise skill week 4!

  • Glorious locally gathered Pacific Ponderosa pine needles - cleaned, glycerined* and ready to weave!

ONE IMPORTANT THING…Let’s keep this stress free! No required homework. If you want to weave between sessions, great. If you don’t, that’s okay too.

*Applying vegetable glycerin to needles is a natural preparation that makes the needles more flexible, smooth, and less prone to break while weaving. This is not required but is considered a valuable added step for many weavers.

Minimum age: 14 must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Workshop registration minimum: 6 students by one week prior to first session. If the workshop minimum is not reached, the workshop could be cancelled. All those registered would be notified and refunded in full.

Thursday Class Schedule: June 4th, June 11th, June 18th and June 25th from 6-8:00pm

Class registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However, if you want to sell or give your workshop series to a friend, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking, etc) and the small class sizes, I’m unable to support refunds or credits.
